The CLEW Team

Sven Egenter heads the team as Editor in Chief and Executive Director. He covered the German, Swiss and British economies during his 12 years at Reuters, writing extensively about the financial crisis. He ran the team covering the British economy as Chief Economics Correspondent, UK in London and managed Reuters' editorial operation in Switzerland as Acting Bureau Chief in 2010. Before his career as a journalist, he worked for the EXPO2000 World Exhibition in Hannover. He taught journalism at Kingston University and holds a MS in Journalism from Boston University and a degree in economics from the University of Münster.

Sören Amelang is a staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. During his 15 years at the news agency Reuters, he wrote about international business, economics and politics. He was lead writer for Reuters’ German coverage of the financial crisis and the ensuing debt crisis in Europe. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Development Studies from Liverpool University and an MA in International Relations from the University of Sussex.

Julian Wettengel is a staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. Before joining the team, he served as a parliamentary assistant to the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament. In this role, he was responsible for the preparation of speeches, articles and briefings for the chairman. Prior to his time in Brussels, he supported a professor at the George Washington University as a research assistant. Julian has also worked for a number of TV productions as camera assistant, sound operator and researcher. He holds a Master's degree in political science from the University of Kiel.

Benjamin Wehrmann is staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. Before joining CLEW’s editorial staff, he worked for the AFP news agency in Berlin, Paris and Frankfurt, reporting mainly on domestic politics and economics. He also used to work for the German n-tv news channel as well as for dpa news agency in France. Benjamin holds a joint degree in political science from University of Bath, Sciences Po Paris and FU Berlin and a degree in economics and social sciences from FU Bolzano.

Eva Freundorfer is Manager for Human Resources and Administration. She has worked at Clean Energy Wire since 2014, previously organising and managing various media programmes. Prior to CLEW, she worked on campaign communication and fundraising for Greenpeace in Switzerland and Germany, and before that as a staff member of both the Goethe Institut in Lomé, Togo and the non-profit arts organisation Werkstatt der Kulturen in Berlin. She holds a Master of Arts in History from the Humboldt University of Berlin.

Milou Dirkx is Journalism Network Manager at Clean Energy Wire. She is the first point of contact for the members of the CLEW Journalism Network, and develops events and other opportunities for climate and energy reporters to engage. Prior to joining CLEW, she was part of the datateam of De Correspondent. Previously, she did project management for the European Journalism Centre and community management for the European Press Prize. Milou holds a Master of Science degree in Political Behaviour and Political Theory from the University of Amsterdam.

Boris Schneider is at the centre of the team's international and cross-border activities as European Journalism Project Manager. Previously, he has coordinated initiatives to boost climate journalism in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe as part of n-ost - a Berlin-based network for cross-border journalism. Before that, he worked as a specialist on Eastern European climate and energy topics, as well as for navos Public Dialogue Consultants and the German Economic Team at Berlin Economics. He holds an MSc in Economics from the Free University of Berlin. Together with two climate journalists, he is also running a monthly podcast focused on climate news from Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet space: The Eurasian Climate Brief.

Renato Malaga is Manager Finances and Administration for Clean Energy Wire. Previously, he was in charge of ‘‘Patrulla Ecologica Social,’’ an environmental non-profit organisation in Peru carrying out afforestation and other environmental protection projects. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in business management from the Catolica San Pablo University in Peru and an MSc in environmental and resource management from Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.

Orwa Alkhateeb is a working student at Clean Energy Wire. He assists the team in administrative tasks, event management, and ongoing research about current developments in climate policy in Germany and Europe. He studies Agricultural Sciences at the Humbuldt University of Berlin. His previous work experience includes organising climate awareness campaigns for a non-profit organisation in his home country Syria as well as an internship with „Eaternity“, a Swiss company developing solutions for the food industry through exact environmental footprint measurements.

Clemens A. Schöll is Journalism Programme Manager at Clean Energy Wire. He is organizing study trips, conferences and different types of on- and offline trainings. Previously, he was organizing programs for journalists from and in Central and Eastern Europe. As a journalist, he worked for many different media outlets, including dpa, Stiftung Warentest and Thüringer Allgemeine.
